Lone Tension

도시는 바쁘고, 혼잡하며, 긴장으로 가득 차있다. 매일 같은 장소에서 움직이는 사람들. 그 수많은 인파의 물결 속에 있다 보면, 어디로 향해 가는지도 모른 채 계속 걷고만 있게 된다. 그런 도시의 생활 속에서, 잠시 발걸음을 멈추게 하는 순간들이 있다. 빛이 드리워져, 흔적을 남기고, 조각을 만들며, 공간을 재구성할 때, 낯설게 느껴지는 풍경 속에서 기분 좋은 고독감을 느낄 때가 있다. 비록 그 순간이 오래 지속되지는 못하더라도, 고독의 시간은 잠깐의 여유와 환기를 갖게 해준다. 나에게 사진작업은 다양한 가능성과의 대화이다. 도시에 머물러있거나 스쳐 지나가면서 보았던 것들을 주로 시각이 주는 구체적인 대상이나 상황이 아니라 그것으로부터 느껴지는 인상에 이끌려 기록한다. 그리고 기록한 대상들을 보며 그 인상이 무엇이었는지를 되짚어 보는데, 사진을 선택하고 불필요한 정보를 제거하기 위해 확대하거나 잘라내는 작업을 통해 처음과는 다른 감각의 가능성을 접하기도 한다. Lone Tension 시리즈의 작품들은 주로 고독과 긴장이라는 감각에 의존해있다. 고독과 긴장은 도시에 사는 내내 겪게 되는 감정으로 그것으로부터 벗어나고 싶어도 쉽게 벗어날 수가 없다. 현실을 벗어나고자 하는 시선 속에 현실 너머의 세계에 대한 동경과 기대감이 있었지만 그 기대 또한 도시의 삶 속에서 이내 사라지게 될 것을 알고 있기 때문에 나에게 고독의 모습은 불안과 여유를 주는 이중적인 감정으로 비춰진다. 고독의 풍경 속에 긴장의 전조가 느껴진다. 그러나 기록한 순간과 바라보는 순간의 감각의 차이는 작업과정 속에서뿐만 아니라 작품을 보는 이들에게도 존재한다. 나는 공감했던 대상에서 감각의 미묘함을 끌어내기 위한 선택을 하고 유사한 대상들을 보여줄 뿐이다. 그리고는 또 다른 가능성과의 대화를 기대해 보는 것이다.(작가노트/이성민)

Cities are always busy, overly-crowded and overwhelmed with tension. People who move in only the same places every day. When I let myself in the crowd of such people, I find how I keep walking even without knowing where I am heading for. However, there are times when such life of mine in the city gives me a moment to stand still. I come to feel a pleasant sense of loneness in this strange place when I try to reconstruct spaces with traces and pieces that pouring rays of light would create. I may have only a few short moments to enjoy the feeling but, the time with the loneliness is always generous enough to refresh myself up through little breaks of relaxation. To me, photographing is conversations that I would have with various possibilities. As for these I would see during my stay in a city or without knowing, I keep records of them for I am drawn to these particular impressions of theirs but not to some details that my eyes would notice. I then look into what I have recorded and try to figure out what the impressions were and in order to select pictures and remove unnecessary information, I enlarge or cut which would lead me to other possibilities of different senses. Works in Lone Tension Series basically rely on these senses of loneliness and tension. As feelings that you can never avoid even for a moment if you live in a city, loneliness and tension do not leave you alone just easily. I did have dreams and expectations about this world beyond the reality which my eyes have been watching to help me get rid of the reality but since I am sure that such expectations will be gone fast enough in my city life, for me, the image of loneliness is considered some twofold feeling that deals with anxiety and rest at the same time. I can sense a sign of tension in a place of loneliness.However, differences in the senses that you experience at the time of recording and watching would exist not only in a process of creation but also in people enjoying a work. I do nothing but make choices to extract delicacy of senses from objects of my sympathy and introduce similar objects to others. Then, I look forward to having a new conversation with a different possibility.

MIDDLE STAGE

도시를 오고 가며, 멈춰있는 도구들을 본다. 멈춰 설 여유가 없는 생활 속에 들어가 있을 때는 보이지 않던 것이었다. 쓸모에 의해 만들어져, 한때는 무언가를 위해 열심히 제 역할을 해왔을 법한 도구들이 지금 동작을 하고 있지 않거나, 제자리가 아닌 곳에 있다 하더라도 그것이 버려졌거나 끝이 난 것처럼 보이진 않는다. 비록 지금은 도구 본연의 기능을 하고 있지 못하고 있더라도, 변모되는 과정 사이에서 앞으로 어떻게 될지 모르는 여지를 갖고 있기 때문에 움직임이 없는 상태는 마치 다른 기다림을 갖고 있는 듯하다. 그것은 시작도 끝도 아닌, 중간의 단계를 떠올리게 한다. 시작과 끝과 달리 중간은 변화가 보이지 않는 상태일수 있다. 그 시기는 아무것도 보이지 않고, 제 역할을 하지 못하고 있는 것 같을 수도 있겠지만 아직 보이지 않을 뿐. 이전엔 알 수 없었던 다른 가능성에 대한 기대감과, 기다림이 있다.(작가노트/이성민)

I look at stationary tools by passing the city.I could not see them when I was in the life with no time to stand still. Even though such tools that might play their roles in some areas are not operating or staying in the original places, they do not look like they have been abandoned or their roles have been ended. Even though they are not showing their own functions, they have possibilities for the future in the process of changes so that the stationary conditions are like to have another waiting.It reminds me of neither the start nor the end, but the stage of middle.Contrary to the start and the end, such changes might not be seen in the middle. During this period of time, nothing could be seen and they look like they do not play their own roles. However, there are expectancy and waiting for another possibilities unknown before.
